Meet Our Instructors

Our courses are taught by local professionals who are experts in their field. Our instructors employ a range of educational tools for maximum impact: lectures, group discussions, demonstrations and videos. Our classes allows you to forge connections with fellow students, and instructors alike, providing a forum for professional camaraderie, networking and referrals-even after you have completed the course.

What do you like most about teaching for the Utah Safety Council?

A great organization with great leadership and fabulous people to work with at the USC.  I also really enjoy meeting and learning from the course participants and the instructors.  Overall great environment, people and materials.  I appreciate working with others who have the same goal (and hopefully desire after completing courses) to keep people safe and healthy.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             

Any interesting experiences you’ve had while teaching for the Utah Safety Council?

I have been able to learn a lot and experience many things – including hands on teaching and using different equipment, meeting some fabulous and interesting people, and it is great seeing how safety and the principles/techniques are used/implemented by different people and organizations.    

Additional Safety Related Experience:

SAFE LIFE instructor at elementary schools; 35+ years Health Safety and Environmental professional experience in several fields (25+ years Manager); Leader in Boy Scouts of America for 28+ years including 6 years with Special needs Scouts; Leader in church organization 40+ years; Facilitate Addiction Recovery Meetings (5 years); BS Degree – Manufacturing Engineering Technology (Weber State University); Industrial Engineering MTM-GPD accreditation (MTM Associates).                   

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      

Additional Safety Related Experience and Local Community Service:

Family first – wife Minette (36+ years), 3 children + a daughter in law, 3 grandsons; Participate in all types of sports; 2nd Degree Black Belt (Dan) in Hap Ki-Do Karate (all family involved); love to cook; own Catering Dutch Oven catering business (Family Dutch Oven Chefs); loves to travel (49 States and 12 countries so far).     

Eric E. Johnson, MS, CSP, CPEA, CPSA, CSHM

Safety & Health Consultant/Instructor
Has taught for the Utah Safety Council for 15 years.
Teaches: OSHA Compliance Series Courses (both general and construction industries); OSHA 30 Hour – General Industry; and Breakfast Safety Seminars. 

What do you like most about teaching for the Utah Safety Council?

The safety profession is full of challenges and rewards.  The most enjoyable part of my career is meeting, working with and helping all kinds of people to realize the importance of safety in their lives.  Teaching at the Utah Safety Council provides a wonderful opportunity to interact with amazing people to share experiences and information that can contribute to illuminating ideas and the promotion of timeless safety principles.  Helping people to understand why they want to work safe is a difficult, yet wonderful and rewarding challenge that never grows old.

Any interesting experiences you’ve had while teaching for the Utah Safety Council?

Each class taught comes with wonderful windows of opportunity to create lasting relationships with remarkable people that are trying to make a difference for the companies that they work for.  Lively discussions about various safety principles, federal and state safety regulations, and the reason why it is so important to persevere in championing the growth of successful safety programs always seem to be a benefit of each class.

Additional Safety Related Experience and Local Community Service:

Volunteer work for the city where I live to assist in the implementation of important OSHA regulations for the use, handling and proper storage of chemicals.  Service on local school boards to help with decisions relating to important safety and health issues. Leadership on local church councils to assist with development of emergency preparedness plans. Serving on local Boy Scout committees to help young men earn safety and emergency preparedness badges.

Hobbies and Interests:

I love to do things with my family.  Hiking, picnics, golfing, boating, movies, traveling to fun places together, etc.  Sharing all this with my best friend and sweetheart of 46 years is what life is really all about.

Kevin Robinson, M.E., C.S.P.

Environmental, Health, & Safety Professional
Has taught for the Utah Safety Council for 18 years.
Teaches:Advanced Safety Certification Courses, Breakfast Safety Seminars, Safety Management Systems and OSHA Compliance Series Courses

What do you like most about teaching for the Utah Safety Council?

The opportunity to provide knowledge, experience, and skills to members in their learning so as to help them be more successful in their safety & health pograms.  

Any interesting experiences you’ve had while teaching for the Utah Safety Council?

It is awesome to see individuals take new learning they have received at the Utah Safety Council and apply it and have success from it.  This motivates me as an individual to help others have success.

Doug Slagowski

What do you like most about teaching for the Utah Safety Council?

It provides an opportunity to pass on a lot of safety information and Utah Driving Laws not generally known to the driving public.

Any interesting experiences you’ve had while teaching for the Utah Safety Council?

Dealing with an 80+ year old lady that has serious road rage issues to the point she was harassing 70+ year olds and making it her lot in life to “correct” everyone’s perceived driving inadequacies.   

Additional Safety Related Experience

I’ve taught Emergency Vehicle Operations (EVO) for 26 years to police officers from all over the US, Canada, Great Britain, and Australia.  In 2000, I was also a consultant for the FBI’s EVO driving program at Quantico, VA.  I trained FBI agents and State Department personnel prior to the 2002 Olympics in High Risk Offensive Tactics.  I was the Subject Matter Expert in the production of an online driving course for novice drivers and their mentors and an online driving course for police officers in EVO.  Currently, I’m still active in producing simulation programs and training officers from around the US and Canada in Emergency Driving Techniques on simulators.

Hobbies and Interests:

Backpacking, rock crawling in my Jeep, hunting, and traveling all over the country in my motorhome. 

Steve Thygerson Ph.D., MSPH, CIH

Occupational Safety & Health Professor
Has taught for the Utah Safety Council for 3 years.
Teaches: Advanced Safety Certificate Courses; OSHA Compliance Courses and Breakfast Safety Seminars.

What do you like most about teaching for the Utah Safety Council?
I like the interaction with the participants. They come from a variety of backgrounds in industry, construction and mining. Their expertise is vast and I enjoy that they are so teachable but also willing to share their experiences and teach everyone else.

Any interesting experiences you’ve had while teaching for the Utah Safety Council?

I like to intentionally create oxidizing agents and simple asphyxiants – fancy terms for instantaneously starting a fire and then putting the fire out. I also love the participant’s reactions when I show what 30% hydrogen peroxide does to a cow eyeball.

Additional Safety Related Experience:

I enjoy presenting at the Utah Conference on Safety and Industrial Hygiene. I’m on the Utah state board for ski lift safety. I’ve worked for 17 years in EHS for large private companies, workers comp insurance companies, OSHA, academia, and consulting companies.                                                                    

Hobbies and Interests:

Skiing and backpacking with my family any chance I can get, head coach for competitive soccer, working on my ’69 FJ40 Land Cruiser, making my own cowboy loads for .38 special revolvers.
