Q. Can I take the Online Defensive Driving Course?

A. Many courts and business utilize this course. It is your responsibility to make sure the online course will be accepted by the agency requiring you to take a course. The online Defensive Driving Course does NOT meet the requirement for the Approaching Emergency Vehicles, Slow Down Move Over Violation. You must take the live, in-person four-hour Defensive Driving Course. The Utah Driver License Division will ONLY accept the live in-person course if you are taking the class for that violation.

Q. How do I enroll in the course?

A. Applications are accepted in person, by mail, fax, and telephone or via the internet. Payment must be received with the application prior to the course date. If registering by mail, payment by check or money order is required. DO NOT SEND CASH. Telephone, fax and internet applications REQUIRE payment by credit card.

Q. Must I pre-register?

A. Yes. Pre-registration is required for all courses and certificates of completion are given only after the course fees have been paid.

Q. What do I receive for taking the Defensive Driving Course?

A. After completing the Defensive Driving Course, you have the option to receive a fifty-point reduction from your Utah Driving Record. Individuals over 55 may also be eligible for an automobile insurance discount--contact your agent prior to taking the course. The course can also be taken for the Approaching Emergency Vehicles/Slow Down, Move Over Violation and the seat belt violation fine waivers. Contact the court prior to taking the course.

Q. Who will be notified when I complete my Defensive Driving Course?

A. The Utah Safety Council will notify the Utah Driver License Division of your completion as long as you indicate on your registration form that you are taking the course for "Point Reduction on a Utah License” or that you received the "Approaching Emergency Vehicles, Slow Down Move Over Violation.” If you were referred by a court, insurance company or out of state agency it is YOUR responsibility to notify them of your completion. The Utah Safety Council does not report your completion to these entities.

Q. When will I receive my certificate of completion?

A. Students WILL NOT receive their completion certificates at the time of class. Students will receive their completion certificate by mail following the completion of the course. COMPLETION RECORDS ARE NOT PROCESSED UNTIL THE COURSE IS COMPLETED AND REGISTRATION FEES ARE PAID. Please note that class processing may take up to two weeks for some areas. Q. Why does registration require an e-mail address? What if I don't have one?

A. Your email address is the primary method used to send you your receipt of payment and confirm your registration. You are required to provide an e-mail address to register. If you don't have an e-mail address, or if you don't want to provide your e-mail address, contact the Utah Safety Council to arrange a different registration method. The Utah Safety Council will not sell, rent, or lease your personally identifiable information to others.

Q. There are multiple people in my family taking this course. Can we share one account?

A. Only one certificate can be issued for each account. Thus every family member taking the course must have his or her own account.

Q. I'm trying to register and keep receiving this error message: "The Login ID you entered has already been taken, please try again..." What's wrong?

A. It is most likely that you have already registered, making this a duplicate registration attempt. Once you have registered successfully, you do not need to register again to complete the course. You are now eligible to return to the course anytime, simply by logging in with the Login ID and password you provided during registration.

NOTE: If you have already completed this course and are required to take it again (e.g. to renew your insurance discount, as a work requirement, or for a repeat ticket, etc.) you must register as a NEW student and create a NEW login ID.

Q. I cannot progress through the course. What should I do?

A. This may be due to the offline content cached by your browser. It's recommended that you flush your local cache and try the course again. It's also recommended you use Internet Explorer or Netscape. If you continue to have problems, contact Technical Support at 800.775.1484.
