Live Four-Hour Defensive Driving Course
Q. Can I take the Online Defensive Driving Course?
A. Many courts and business utilize this course. It is your responsibility to make sure the online course will be accepted by the agency requiring you to take a course. The online Defensive Driving Course does NOT meet the requirement for the Approaching Emergency Vehicles, Slow Down Move Over Violation. You must take the live, in-person four-hour Defensive Driving Course. The Utah Driver License Division will ONLY accept the live in-person course if you are taking the class for that violation.
Q. How do I enroll in the course?
A. Applications are accepted in person, by mail, fax, and telephone or via the internet. Payment must be received with the application prior to the course date. If registering by mail, payment by check or money order is required. DO NOT SEND CASH. Telephone, fax and internet applications REQUIRE payment by credit card.
Q. Must I pre-register?
A. Yes. Pre-registration is required for all courses and certificates of completion are given only after the course fees have been paid.
Q. What do I receive for taking the Defensive Driving Course?
A. After completing the Defensive Driving Course, you have the option to receive a fifty-point reduction from your Utah Driving Record. Individuals over 55 may also be eligible for an automobile insurance discount--contact your agent prior to taking the course. The course can also be taken for the Approaching Emergency Vehicles/Slow Down, Move Over Violation and the seat belt violation fine waivers. Contact the court prior to taking the course.
Q. Who will be notified when I complete my Defensive Driving Course?
A. The Utah Safety Council will notify the Utah Driver License Division of your completion as long as you indicate on your registration form that you are taking the course for "Point Reduction on a Utah License” or that you received the "Approaching Emergency Vehicles, Slow Down Move Over Violation.” If you were referred by a court, insurance company or out of state agency it is YOUR responsibility to notify them of your completion. The Utah Safety Council does not report your completion to these entities.
Q. When will I receive my certificate of completion?
A. Students WILL NOT receive their completion certificates at the time of class. Students will receive their completion certificate by mail following the completion of the course. COMPLETION RECORDS ARE NOT PROCESSED UNTIL THE COURSE IS COMPLETED AND REGISTRATION FEES ARE PAID. Please note that class processing may take up to two weeks for some areas. If you need your completion certificate sooner, you may call 801.746.SAFE (7233) the following business day to make other arrangements and our office will do it's best to accommodate your request.
Q. What if I miss my class?
A. If you have missed your class, you must register again. The course is not refundable at this point.
Q. How often may I take the Defensive Driving Course for a point reduction?
A. You may take the course for a point reduction once every three years.
Q. Does the Defensive Driving Course involve behind the wheel instruction?
A. No. The course is four hours of classroom instruction and focuses on collision prevention, driving confidence, awareness of hazards and improving driving ability.
Q. Are there other fees that may be assessed?
A. Yes. There is a $10.00 processing fee for all course cancellations and a $30.00 fee for all returned checks.
Q. Who do I call for information regarding my driving record?

Q. Am I eligible to take the Online Defensive Driving Course?
A. It is your responsibility to make sure the online course will be accepted by the agency referring you to take a course. No refunds will be issued once you have registered for the online course, so it is important to make sure you are taking the correct course beforehand. The Online Defensive Driving Course does NOT meet the requirement for the Approaching Emergency Vehicles, Slow Down Move Over Violation. The Utah Driver License Division will ONLY accept the live in-person course if you are taking the class for that violation.
Q. What do I need to know about the Online Defensive Driving course?
A. This Internet based, driver-training program is separated into seven sessions and takes the average student approximately four hours to complete. The account you create is valid for up to one year from your registration date. If you are taking the course for a specific purpose, such as for an employer, or as a court requirement, please check first to see if you qualify, as well as verify when your deadline is to complete the course. No refunds will be issued once you have registered. There is an untimed, multiple choice test at the end. If you do not pass you may retake the test at no additional charge.
Q. How do I enroll in the course?
A. From the main Online Defensive Driving Registration page, select the option that applies to you and follow the steps to complete your registration. Make sure to complete all steps. If you have problems with your registration or logging in, contact the Utah Safety Council at 801.746.SAFE (7233) for assistance.
Q. Do I have to complete the course in one sitting?
A. No. At registration you create a username and password. There is a bookmarking feature, so you can take breaks between sessions and return to the course where you left off. If you need to exit the course and log in again, click here. If you log back in the course and it has not saved your progress, contact Technical Support at 800.775.1484.
Q. I've forgotten my password. How do I log in?
A. On the login page click the link to "Forgot your ID or password?" to find out what your options are for retrieving your password.
Q. Who will be notified when I complete my Online Defensive Driving Course?
A. The Utah Safety Council does NOT notify anyone of your completion. It is YOUR responsibility to notify whomever is requiring you to take the course that you have completed.
Q. When will I receive my certificate of completion?
A. Following your completion of the Online Defensive Driving Course you will be able to print out your certificate. This is the only way you will receive it. If you need a copy of your certificate at a later date, you can log back into your account and on the left hand side of the screen, one of the menu options will be for a certificate. When you select that ink, you can print your certificate.
Q. What are the hardware and software requirements for accessing the Online Defensive Driving Course?
A. The Online Defensive Driving Course is compatible with desktop computers and laptops. If you would like to take this program on a tablet device please note that you need to download an app for Adobe Flash Player such as iSwifter or Revel. This course is NOT compatible with gaming devices or smart phones. The best way to test if your hardware and software (OS) are compatible with the course is to play the demo course.
Q. How do I download or update Adobe Flash Player?
A. There are detailed instructions on how to download the Flash Player here. You can either use automatic or manual installation. Due to the variety of firewall setups and rowser types, manual installation is the best option to bypass restrictions. Please click here to update the player.
Q. Why does registration require an e-mail address? What if I don't have one?
A. Your email address is the primary method used to send you your receipt of payment and confirm your registration. You are required to provide an e-mail address to register. If you don't have an e-mail address, or if you don't want to provide your e-mail address, contact the Utah Safety Council to arrange a different registration method. The Utah Safety Council will not sell, rent, or lease your personally identifiable information to others.
Q. There are multiple people in my family taking this course. Can we share one account?
A. Only one certificate can be issued for each account. Thus every family member taking the course must have his or her own account.
Q. I'm trying to register and keep receiving this error message: "The Login ID you entered has already been taken, please try again..." What's wrong?
A. It is most likely that you have already registered, making this a duplicate registration attempt. Once you have registered successfully, you do not need to register again to complete the course. You are now eligible to return to the course anytime, simply by logging in with the Login ID and password you provided during registration.
NOTE: If you have already completed this course and are required to take it again (e.g. to renew your insurance discount, as a work requirement, or for a repeat ticket, etc.) you must register as a NEW student and create a NEW login ID.
Q. I cannot progress through the course. What should I do?
A. This may be due to the offline content cached by your browser. It's recommended that you flush your local cache and try the course again. It's also recommended you use Internet Explorer or Netscape. If you continue to have problems, contact Technical Support at 800.775.1484.
